Do You Need to Be Flexible to Start Pole Dancing?
When you think of pole dancing, you might picture incredible backbends, jaw-dropping splits, or bodies folding in ways you never thought possible.
That can be part of it, sure, but it’s not the whole story.
It's totally normal to feel hesitant when you first start - you're stepping into something new and unknown. It’s exciting... but also a bit scary.
"Do I need to be strong? Do I need to be flexible?"
These are thoughts every newbie has.
But you honestly don’t need anything to start - just a willingness to try.
Let's talk about why.
Pole is about learning to move your body in new ways.
It’s about building strength, exploring your style, and finding what makes you feel powerful. Flexibility is just one small piece of the puzzle - and for many people, it comes with time (or it doesn't, and that's okay too).
Sarah, one of our OG Altitudians and studio owners, shared her own story:
"Despite dancing from when I was five to 15, I never got to a point where I could do the splits. But with pole, I found flexibility developed over time - and it’s just one aspect of it. It’s not the defining measure of success."
After more than a decade of pole dancing, Sarah still doesn’t consider herself super flexible - and it hasn’t held her back at all.
Her strength, creativity, musicality and power are what make her stand out. Not the angle of her leg or how deep her backbend is.
And she’s right. Some of the most incredible pole dancers in the world are celebrated for their flow, emotion, and pure presence - not just their flexibility.
Pole dancing is an art, a sport, and a personal journey.
There’s no single way to do it. No one version of what “good” looks like.
If you’re drawn to it, if you love it, if it makes your life better - that’s what matters.
So if you’ve been holding yourself back because you can’t touch your toes or do the splits - haere mai (welcome!).
You belong just as you are.
