How to make the most out of a private lesson!
As much as going to class every week will help you improve, sometimes you need something extra to push you beyond a plateau, or to accelerate your growth. Privates are the perfect thing for this - we have SO many amazing instructors who have SO much knowledge to share with you!
But how do you get the most out of a private? It might seem like a silly question - you turn up and the instructor shows you some cool shit - but there are actually a lot of ways for you to get more out of a private than you might have thought.
We went to the givers-of-privates themselves, our instructors, for a few hot tips on how to get the best bang for your buck. Check them out!
1. Know what you want
Booking in a private is a great start, but if you turn up and say "Make me an amazing pole dancer please!" with nothing else, you're probably not going to have the most useful session possible. Your instructor needs a bit more information than that: what are you struggling with? What are your goals? Is the private to go over a routine? What parts of the routine are you most unsure about? Write everything down so you don't forget when it's time for your sesh! Listing by priority is a good idea too so that you get through the most important things.
2. Tell your instructor what you want in advance
So you've figured out what you want to get out of your private, that's great! But if you wait until the actual session to tell your instructor then they'll have to figure out how to help you on the spot, whereas telling them in advance means they can start to think of a plan for you beforehand. In fact, don't just tell them, send them a video! Wanna work on your invert? Or a routine? Film where you're at already and flick it through so that they can be even more prepared.
3. Turn up energized and warmed up/stretched
You probably don't need the instructor to take you through a warm up - you know how to do that already, it's a waste of the time you've paid for! If it's possible, warm yourself up and stretch beforehand. And don't forget, a private session is only YOU and the instructor, so you're going to be working hard! No point turning up dehydrated and with an empty stomach, you'll have to spend half the time sitting down recovering.
4. Take notes and film during the private
Don't just rely on your memory, you're likely to forget little (or big!) details that turn out to be important later. It's worth it to pause for a couple of minutes and jot down some notes. Even better, if you're working on something that would benefit from filming, then set up your camera and record (just make sure to check with your instructor that they're okay with this first!).
5. Pick the right instructor for the job
Muscly Maria might be your favourite instructor ordinarily, but if you're after some tips on a flexibility based move then maybe you should see Flexy Phyllis instead. Or if you want to add something a bit exotic to your routine, don't go to Line-dance Leanne, ask Sexy Phyllis for some help (Phyllis is multi-talented). As much as all of our instructors are amazing beautiful geniuses, they're not all amazing beautiful geniuses at the same things.
Also, if you don't know Sexy/Flexy Phyllis very well (which you shouldn't, she isn't real), then maybe give her a bit of info on where you're at and how you like to learn before hand.
